China police arrest man after plane bomb threats
Beijing (AFP) May 18, 2013 - Chinese police have arrested a man who allegedly made bomb threats which caused delays or diversions to Shanghai, news reports said Saturday.

Eleven flights were affected in total, though the suspect is not alleged to be behind all the threats. The planes were travelling from Beijing, Chongqing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, the Beijing News reported.

One flight from Guangzhou on Friday had to be diverted to Fuzhou following an anonymous call to the airports after takeoff. Passengers were evacuated and the plane and baggage searched.

In three of the 11 cases the planes had already arrived at their destination.

The threats involved Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Sichuan Airlines and Spring Airlines.

A suspect surnamed Ji was arrested and had confessed, Chinese civil aviation information site Carno.com said. His motive was not known.

Five flights operated by three Chinese airlines had already been hit by bomb threats on Wednesday, the official Xinhua news agency said.

Two similar alerts had occurred in February and two in October, the Beijing News said.

According to Wu Xiaojun, a magistrate in Beijing, these threats are most often impulsive acts by angry men in their twenties or thirties.

Making false bomb threats in punishable by up 15 years in prison in serious cases.

Activists demanding the closure of Guantanamo prison marked the 100th day of a hunger strike there Friday by submitting a petition to the White House containing some 370,000 signatures.

A group of activists wearing orange jumpsuits and black hoods like those used on detainees at Guantanamo Bay gathered outside the White House to call for the immediate closure of the controversial jail.

"Immoral, illegal, ineffective," a banner read.

Richard Killmer, executive director of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, said that "years of detention without charge or trial have created a sense of desperation and hopelessness among the men at Guantanamo, which has led over 100 of them to join a hunger strike."

Colonel Morris Davis, a former military prosecutor at Guantanamo, handed over the petition to the White House.

Activists also brandished a dummy of President Barack Obama, referencing his past vow to close the US military prison.

Out of 166 inmates, 102 are on hunger strike at Guantanamo with 30 being fed through tubes. One inmate continued to be hospitalized but prison officials said his life was not in danger.
