Japan's first GPS satellite in operational orbit

Japan's first navigation satellite will improve positioning coverage in mountainous terrain and urban centers, authorities say. The country's space agency announced the Michibiki satellite entered its orbit Monday more than 20,000 miles above Asia, SPACE.com reported. Michibiki, which means "guiding" or "showing the way" in Japanese, will undergo three months of technology tests before it enters service. Japan launches satellite for better GPS coverage

Japan on Saturday launched a rocket carrying a satellite intended to improve global positioning systems. The H-IIA rocket blasted off at 8:17pm (1117 GMT) from the Tanegashima space centre in southern Japan, according to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Russia has sent three satellites into space early Wednesday, said spokesman for Russian Space Forces Alexei Zolotukhin.
