Just a few years ago, Dan Farber happened to be doing field work in Peru with students when the 8.0 Pisco earthquake struck. As a scientist working in the active tectonics of the Peruvian Andes - funded through the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Physics - Farber was asked by colleagues if he could participate in a rapid response team to map the damage of the seismic deformation and install a system of geodetic stations. No panic near Iceland volcano despite threat of ash and floods

Some 800 people have repeatedly been forced to flee their homes near an ash-spewing volcano in southern Iceland, but despite the imminent threat of flash floods and toxic ash, there are few signs of alarm. As ash from an Iceland volcano snarled air travel across Europe, experts said an eruption of the 'supervolcano' at the Yellowstone national park would be deadly, though it is unlikely any time soon. Boeing representatives joined the U.S. Air Force and Florida Air National Guard (ANG) in Jacksonville to roll out the first operational ANG F-15C equipped with an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar. Boeing is under contract to upgrade 14 ANG and 10 Air Force F-15C/D aircraft with AESA.
