Ekahau Asset Tracking Technology To Streamline Ground Support For Air Force

Ekahau is playing a central role in an automated system for tracking critical ground support equipment at Hill Air Force Base in Utah. The Ekahau Real Time Location System was selected by Knowledge Based Systems as a key component in the Intelligent Asset Tracking and Management System it has developed as part of a project funded by the US Air Force.

The Ekahau RTLS is the only software-based real-time location system available today that can leverage existing Wi-Fi networks and pinpoint tagged assets with an accuracy of three to five meters both indoors and outdoors.

"We initially considered a GPS solution, but quickly realized that the accuracy was not good enough inside buildings and hangers at Hill. The Ekahau RTLS provided us with strong capabilities for tracking assets both inside hangars and other buildings, and offered a flexible solution that integrated nicely with the existing wireless LAN infrastructure in the hangers and buildings," said Dr. Mike Graul, who is heading the project for KBSI.

"The solution allows the crews to work more efficiently, reducing the amount of time aircraft are out of service and improving the readiness of the Air Force to respond to their mission."

Monitoring the location of millions of dollars worth of ground support equipment is a challenge that is faced by Hill Air Force Base officials and those at other large military facilities. The IATMS allows tagged ground support equipment to be tracked inside hangers and buildings by Hill personnel using their laptops, PDAs, and other Wi-Fi-enabled devices.

The Ekahau RTLS also delivers to the IATMS a back-end reporting functionality. This allows personnel at Hill Air Force Base to monitor GSE via a web interface that provides them with near real-time information about where assets are located, as well as other reports to track the movement history of all tagged equipment in buildings and hangers on base.

"Ekahau's asset tracking capability is a perfect solution for those environments - like Hill Air Force Base - where individuals instantly need to know the location of thousands of mission-critical items," said Tuomo Rutanen, vice president of business development at Ekahau.

"Many military facilities are already equipped with wireless LANs, so the addition of a location tracking solution that uses existing Wi-Fi networks is a practical, inexpensive way to expand functionality and streamline operations."
